With the support of Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI), the inaugural Finish Chelsea’s Run 5K will flood San Diego’s Balboa Park with runners and walkers on March 5 at 7:30 a.m. The race is being held to honor the memory of Chelsea King, the Poway teen whose young life was cut short last year by a senseless act of violence. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Chelsea’s Light Foundation Sunflower Scholarship Fund. The competitive run and fun run/walk will travel through Balboa Park and the surrounding neighborhood, including a section of San Diego’s historic State Route 163.
“We’re looking forward to bringing the community together for the first annual Finish Chelsea’s Run and we’re extremely thankful to have Bridgepoint’s support,” stated Janice Penrose, race chair for Finish Chelsea’s Run.
Event organizers have already received more than 2,600 pre-registrations and expect at least 4,000 participants on race day. The weather is expected to offer perfect running conditions, starting brisk and warming into the 60s with partial sun. The 3.1-mile run starts at Sixth Avenue and Palm Street, and winds its way to a finish on Balboa Drive, just south of Quince. Immediately following the race at approximately 9 a.m., an awards ceremony will recognize race winners and event sponsors.
Pre-race coverage of Finish Chelsea’s Run was printed in the San Diego Union-Tribune on February 27. The six-page special section promoted the race and the Chelsea’s Light Foundation Sunflower Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships that support local youth.
