On the morning of March 5, the streets of San Diego were filled with 5,174 people taking part in the first annual Finish Chelsea’s Run 5K. Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI) was the title sponsor of the event and more than 40 Bridgepoint Education employees participated. Donations to the race amounted to approximately $110,000 and will be directed to support San Diego’s youth through the Chelsea’s Light Foundation Sunflower Scholarship Fund.
“Finish Chelsea’s Run was an inspiring event, and the tremendous turnout speaks volumes about San Diegans’ capacity for caring,” stated Andrew Clark, chief executive officer of Bridgepoint Education, who participated in the run. “Bridgepoint Education is proud to have been involved.”
Starting at 7:30 a.m., the competitive and fun run/walk coursed through the area surrounding Balboa Park. Everyone who joined in did so with Chelsea King in mind, a San Diego teenager whose life was taken in 2010 while running alone at Lake Hodges. The 3.1-mile Finish Chelsea’s Run was blessed with perfect race-day weather, and the large turnout far exceeded the goal of 3,000 participants.
