Bridgepoint Education Sponsors Program for Children of Military Service Members

Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (NYSE:BPI) is a proud sponsor of Operation Bigs, a Big Brothers Big Sisters program that provides mentors for children with parents in the military.

“In maintaining our commitment to the community, the Operation Bigs sponsorship is a natural fit for our organization,” said Dan Devine, chief financial officer at Bridgepoint Education and finance chair at Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County. “It aligns with all three of our social responsibility focus areas: education, youth and the military.”

The Military Mentoring Program matches volunteers with children who have a parent who is deployed, will deploy or is just returning from deployment. Bridgepoint Education’s sponsorship money will be used to recruit, screen and train quality military and non-military volunteers.

“We are so thankful for corporations like Bridgepoint Education that find it imperative to give back to their communities,” said Paul Palmer, chief executive officer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County. “Our organization relies primarily on individual and corporate gifts, and would not survive without these sponsorships.”

The Military Mentoring Program began in 2004 and works out of schools and community centers on Camp Pendleton, Coronado, Point Loma, Serra Mesa and MCAS Miramar.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County

For 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income families or households where a parent is incarcerated or has a parent deployed. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”). Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a system of ongoing evaluation and support which is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that “Littles” will perform better in school and avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others.

In San Diego County, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves children ages 7-18 through six distinct programs: Amachi (a program for children with an incarcerated parent), Bigs in Schools & High School Bigs (an after school 1:1 mentoring program), Community Mentoring (the traditional 1:1 mentoring program), Operation Bigs (a program serving children whose active military parents are deployable), and Sports Bigs (a sports and active lifestyle focused mentoring program).
