Former San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders Named Honorary Chair of the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl

Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (NYSE: BPI) has announced that former San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders has been named the Honorary Chair of the 2012 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. The honor is awarded each year to an individual who has contributed to San Diego sports and society in a meaningful way.

“We’re delighted to recognize Jerry Sanders as the Honorary Chair of the 35th annual game,” said Bruce Binkowski, executive director of the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. “His leadership has been invaluable for our region in so many ways and his support of the game has been top notch.”

Mayor Sanders served as San Diego's chief of police from 1993 until 1999, and helped make San Diego's neighborhood-oriented policing a national model, reducing crime by 49 percent. Sanders ascended through the ranks of the police department, becoming one of the youngest police chiefs in the city's history after 20 years on the force. He expanded community-oriented policing and earned a reputation as one of the nation’s most progressive and innovative law enforcement leaders with crime falling to a 25-year low during his time as chief.

After leaving the Police Department, Sanders became the CEO of United Way. In 2002, Sanders was appointed to the American Red Cross board. Sanders was elected mayor of San Diego in 2004 and completed his term as the 34th mayor of San Diego in early December.

This year’s Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl, featuring the Baylor Bears and the UCLA Bruins, kicks off at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, December 27 at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. Tickets are available at www.BridgepointEducationHolidayBowl.com.
