Bridgepoint Education Featured In The Financial Times On October 12th

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 12, 2007) – Bridgepoint Education and its founder and chief executive officer Andrew Clark, was interviewed by London-based Financial Times reporter David Turner, about the companies plans to enter the UK market.

US companies in UK degree plan
By David Turner, Education Correspondent
Profit-making US education companies are planning to offer degrees in the UK, tempted by the introduction of top-up fees and the continuing attractiveness of Britain to foreign students.
A senior executive at a US education company said last year's introduction of £3,000 top-up fees payable by undergraduates "levels the playing field" between Britain's public-sector universities, which used to charge undergraduates nothing, and US fee-charging, for-profit universities.
Andrew Clark, chief executive of Bridgepoint Education, who plans to offer degree courses in Britain "in 18 to 24 months", expects to attract "a mixture of Americans and Britons and perhaps even people from other countries". He says Britain is regarded as an attractive place to live and study - despite recent fears that Britain's large number of foreign university students may increasingly decide to stay in their home countries.
When a subsidiary of the UK education company BPP last month became the first for-profit company to win degree-awarding powers, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers complained about "the relentless march towards the privatisation of education".
Bridgepoint Education's biggest shareholder is the private equity company Warburg Pincus.
Bridgepoint and Kaplan, which have US universities, both plan to concentrate at first on postgraduate business-related degrees, where higher existing UK fees will give them greater competitive advantage. Kaplan plans to apply for degree-awarding powers next year.
