In Honor of 9/11, Ashford University and University of the Rockies Establish Surviving Spouses Scholarship and Posthumous Degrees
Increased benefits provided to American soldiers, military families, supporters and survivors

To honor the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Ashford University and University of the Rockies have increased available benefits for members of the armed forces, including the National Guard and reservists, as well as Department of Defense (DOD) employees, civilian employees of the U.S. Coast Guard, students with Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits and VA employees. In doing so, the universities have expanded educational opportunities and services for those who defend our country, as well as for their families and the people who support them.

Ashford University and University of the Rockies have deeply rooted relationships with U.S. servicemen and women. In an ongoing commitment to the military, the two academic institutions, owned by Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (NYSE: BPI), make regular efforts to support service members and those around them.

“In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, it was our men and women in uniform who received the call,” stated Doug Barling, senior director of Military Relations at Ashford. “Many sacrifices have been made along the way. Offering our support is a good place to start in expressing our thanks to not only those Americans who stand in harm’s way, but to those who directly support them.”

As a part of each university’s gesture to honor Americans in the military, their families and those who support them on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Ashford University and University of the Rockies will improve the availability of military grants. Ashford will extend its offerings to VA employees, and University of the Rockies will make grants available to all members of the U.S. military, their spouses, plus members of the National Guard, reservists, Department of Defense employees, civilian employees of the Coast Guard, students using VA education benefits and VA employees.

Alongside extended benefits already arranged for members of the military, ancillary personnel, and qualifying family members, Ashford University and University of the Rockies have introduced the Surviving Spouses Scholarship. This new program will include free tuition, books and additional benefits for the spouses of fallen service members who attended either university within the previous year. Both universities will also offer a process for awarding posthumous degrees to students who passed away prior to fulfilling their educational aspirations.
