Bridgepoint Education’s Biannual Heroes Day Event Helps Beautify Chollas Lake Park
Volunteer effort saved the city of San Diego an estimated $13,000 in labor and waste fees

As part of Bridgepoint Education’s biannual “Heroes Day” volunteer event, nearly 200 employees from Bridgepoint and one of its academic institutions, Ashford University, spent the morning of Saturday, Sept. 27, tidying up San Diego’s Chollas Lake Park.

“Each year, with our Heroes Day events, our organization is able to have a positive impact on the communities we serve because of the volunteer efforts of our great employees,” said Andrew Clark, chief executive officer at Bridgepoint Education. “At Bridgepoint, giving back to the community is an integral part of who we are and I am proud to see the large number of employees who continue to volunteer their time to make San Diego a wonderful place to live and work.”

At Heroes Day, the volunteers were split into three different groups, each one tasked with a specific project. The perimeter cleanup group was responsible for raking, sweeping, and bagging leaves surrounding the perimeter of the lake, as well as helping with removal of underwater branches. The curb painting team was in charge of painting the curb red along Chollas Station Road to make the road safer for pedestrians. Volunteers in the third group painted picnic tables, trash cans, and other elements of the park.

This was the second Heroes Day held in 2014. Back in April, more than 350 volunteers headed to the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center to build new bicycles to donate to local children as part of the organization’s spring Heroes Day.
